CCTV Camera Installation FAQ
Security Cameras vs. Alarm; Which one should I install to secure my home?
Whether you’re a homeowner or renter in Sydney, one of the most crucial aspects is keeping your property and family safe. You want to protect loved ones and possessions from burglars, intruders and other hazards. Two of the most common systems for protecting buildings are alarm systems and security cameras. You can install either of these systems in your home, and they will monitor your property for potential intrusions. However, it’s sometimes tricky to understand the differences between the two options.
Alarm systems and security cameras have several notable differences. By understanding how each one works, choosing the right solution becomes easier.
Here is an overview of the differences between security alarms and security cameras, and how to choose the right solution.
Can cameras in a separate building be added to my existing wired CCTV system?
Yes, they can-using RF transmission equipment.
A common scenario involves a main house and a separate granny flat or outbuilding. In this setup, the CCTV recorder (DVR or NVR) is usually installed in the main house, and all cameras around it are directly connected via cables. However, physically running a cable from the granny flat to the main building may not be practical due to distance, underground work, or structural limitations.
Instead of using wireless or Wi-Fi-based cameras, hardwired cameras installed in the granny flat can still be integrated into the system using RF (radio frequency) transmission equipment. These devices act as a wireless bridge for video signals, allowing the camera’s video feed to be transmitted over radio frequencies to the recorder in the main house, while still preserving the reliability of a wired connection.
This method ensures a stable, interference-resistant link between buildings, especially in areas where running new cables isn’t feasible.
What are common non-Chinese CCTV brands used in Australia?
1. Hanwha Vision (formerly Samsung Techwin) – South Korea
Hanwha’s CCTV products were originally manufactured under the Samsung brand. Samsung later sold its security division to Hanwha Group, which now continues the product line under the name Hanwha Vision. Hanwha systems are known for their good image quality, reliable performance, and affordability—making them a great option for residential and small to medium-sized business applications.
2. Axis Communications – Sweden
Axis is a premium CCTV brand from Sweden and is widely regarded as a global leader in network video solutions. Known for their innovation, high reliability, and strong cybersecurity features, Axis products are ideal for customers who demand top-tier surveillance systems. They are often used in critical infrastructure, large commercial sites, and enterprise-level installations.
3. Avigilon (a Motorola Solutions company) – Canada / USA
Avigilon is a Canadian brand that was acquired by Motorola Solutions. Their surveillance systems are widely used across North America and Australia, especially in government buildings, universities, hospitals, and other high-security environments. Avigilon offers advanced features such as AI-powered analytics, high-resolution imaging, and end-to-end system integration.
What recording options are available with modern CCTV systems?
When it comes to recording, most CCTV systems on the market today offer flexible options:
-
Continuous Recording: Records 24/7 without interruption.
-
Motion Recording: Records only when motion is detected in selected areas.
-
Event Recording: Records specifically when a human or vehicle is detected in the configured zones.
